I’m unsure if this is widely accepted or actually forgotten or anything at all really, but during Scratch’s story takeover, he says that John is going to die. 

“And while I can’t give you my assurance, I’m reasonably convinced of this much. When the Hero of Breath dies for good, it won’t be as a scoundrel.”

Since he’s God Tier he can only die a just and heroic death.  John’s going to die saving someone.
